PEtab gives systems biologists a common format for parameter estimation problems. Plain TSV files, linked by a YAML file, record which measurements go with which model, how noise is modeled and each parameter’s bounds, so any tool that supports PEtab can load the same problem. PEtab 2.0, released in September, no longer requires SBML models, supports multi-period time courses and lets the community define its own extensions.
Sustainability Snapshot via Cancer Complexity Toolkit:
- Strong documentation with a full specification on Read the Docs
- Active development (v2.0.0 released September 2026, 66 stars)
- Quality indicators: JOSS Score 0.40 | Almanack 0.73 (Maturing)
- Opportunities for growth: Tests and dependency documentation
Why this matters: With PEtab, you can rerun someone else’s modeling problem in your own tool, or compare tools on the same problem, without rebuilding it from scratch. Its “Maturing” Almanack grade reflects a license, citation file, contributing guide and steady releases.
